Teaching the world to crowdfund

Quix featured on Rocket Hub a product worth following!

Here’s another great product featured on a great crowdfunding site – Rocket Hub.

Here’s what they had to say in the campaign. Be sure to check back with us after we’e had the chance to talk with Travis.

Description

There’s nothing like a crying, hungry baby to get a parent thinking, “There has to be a better way.” That’s exactly what I was thinking as I watched my wife try to prepare a bottle of formula at a restaurant while our infant fussed. Necessity, “the mother of invention,” spurred me to launch Quix Products.

Quix introduces a new infant formula bottle that transforms formula preparation from a tedious and stressful task to a simple “twist and shake” to mix the formula.

The Revolutionary Quix Bottle

How the Quix Bottle makes parents lives easier.

The patented, award-winning design of the Quix Bottle keeps baby formula and water separate in one bottle until the moment of need. Then, with just a twist of the valve and a shake of the bottle a parent can immediately and safely feed a hungry child. No mess, less stress.

Mixed powdered formula has only about a one hour shelf life, ruling out premixing at home before going out with a child. When your infant decides he/she is hungry, time is of the essence. Scooping formula into a bottle and screwing on the nipple is messy and stressful when your child is crying or screaming to be fed, especially in a public location.

Mixing separate containers in an uncontrolled environment can also lead to contamination. Ready to feed formula avoids some of these problems but is on average 8-10 times more costly then preparing it yourself.

The Quix Bottle safely delivers the convenience of ready to feed formula but without the much higher cost. Quix is a dishwasher safe, reusable bottle making it a must for every parent who uses powder formula.

About Quix

Quix Products, LLC. is was established to make life easier for busy on-the-go parents. Our first product, the Quix Bottle, achieves this by enabling safe formula bottle preparation to take place anytime, anywhere while reducing stress for parents and children.

What Can You Do to Help?

By helping us reach our funding goal you will be contributing to the manufacturing and marketing of a product that will have a positive life-changing effect on new parents who frequently find themselves preparing bottles to feed their infants in less than ideal conditions. We live in a highly-charged, fast-paced world that has an over-abundance of stressors. Anytime these can be reduced, especially for parents, a natural consequence is a healthier lifestyle for both parents and children.

We are committed to making a difference in parents and their children. “Giving back just feels good”. Please Help Quix Fight Child Hunger.

(For every Quix Bottle you purchase, we provide a meal for a child in need!)

1 Quix Bottle = 1 meal for a hungry child

Retrospective collection of Kal cartoons from The Economist featured on Kickstarter

Wow, talk about one of the best opportunities to come out of 2013 already! If this is any sign to come for Crowdfunding in 2013 the revolution is truly upon us. Be sure to get in early and fund this great artists project for 2013, so that you can take advantage of the rewards!

Here’s what’s posted on Kickstarter from this award winning artist:

“Daggers Drawn: 35 years of editorial cartoons and covers from The Economist by the award winning artist Kevin KAL Kallaugher

I am excited to announce that in April 2013, I will be celebrating my 35th anniversary as cartoonist for The Economist. To mark the occasion, I want to publish a large retrospective collection of my cartoons and covers from the magazine titled Daggers Drawn.

It is my dream to create a high quality coffee table book to mark my 35th anniversary. I alone do not have the resources to make this happen, that is why I am turning to you.

Here are the specifics…

Though I have had a long and colorful career with The Economist, I have always been a free lance contributor to the publication. I do, however, retain the copyright and ownership to all the art I have created for the magazine.

This enables me to publish collections of my cartoons. However, I need to raise money to finance my book projects.

I have published other books, but this will be my first book since 1988 made exclusively of cartoons from The Economist.

And this book project promises to be my best yet!

I will be picking my favorites from over 4000 cartoons and 140 covers I have drawn for the magazine and include some fun stories and insights to my special time there.
The Economist

With the help of fans and supporters, I am hoping to raise the funds to create a top quality book. The more support we can rally, the better quality the book can be.

We have some great rewards for Daggers Drawn supporters. Click the links here to view the Black and White prints, Color cover prints, Original cartoons, and Original Cover artwork that will be available as rewards.

Buddha Doodles are whimsically illustrated daily affirmations created by cartoonist Molly Hahn (a.k.a. Mollycules).

Per the request of her audience, Mollycules is launching this Kickstarter campaign to make a Buddha Doodles app for the iPhone or Android. This app will automatically update your phone with the daily BuDoodle + give you the opportunity to browse the collection of nearly 200 comics or cue up a BuDoodle randomly — all in the palm of your hand!

The funds raised here will go directly into the development of the Buddha Doodles app.

Anthony Feinman – Comic Artist

Anthony Feinman – Comic Artist – crowdfundingeducators created a completely different rendition of crowdfunding that we hadn’t expected. We loved it! Why shouldn’t bankers start thinking about crowdfunding too?

Here’s more information about Anthony. We’re looking forward to supporting him more.

I have been a cartoonist for over twenty years working for my family’s comic book owned company where I have completed a dozen book publications as well as cover designs/business ads/logos/shirts and various other works for newspapers and local Illinois businesses. I current work for Blue Volcano Media based out of Dallas, TX as a Graphics Specialist.

My specialty is cartooning/illustration with photography and graphic design as side specialties.

I have been mostly working in Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and various other design programs for more than a decade.

My work leans heavily on the imaginative side as my influences are cartoonists such as EC Segar (Popeye), Sergio Aragones (Mad Magazine, Groo), Bill Watterson (Calvin & Hobbes) Theodore Geisel (Dr Suess), George Herriman (Krazy Kat) and multitude of others.
I have recently studied briefly at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and stated earlier, self publishing books since 1991.

Crowdfunding Educators

We commissioned Joe to do a number of cartoons for us with the Crowdfunding theme and he loved the idea. Then we told him we were helping out people in need and he was “100%” on board. Joe’s enthusiasm made it easy to see we were working with a great cartoonist.

Here’s his background information.

I love doing freelance because it’s always different. I feel I can think outside of the box and bring strong unique ideas to clients. I think because I’m a fan of art as well as an artist I can see things from both sides. I work mostly with traditional media but have a very strong understanding of Photoshop and use it often.

Here’s his work experience:

2009 – 2011

I was a cover artist and article illustrator. Having the fast paced atmosphere of a newspaper really improved my abilities all around.

We hope you’ll support our ability to continue to work with Joe through donations to our shared campaign and your involvement will set the groundwork for great cartoons to come.

Sincerely,

Funnies 10,08,2012

October 08, 2012, marks the first day that we’re working with some top quality comics to bring crowdfunding to you. We’re taking away the risk for our artists by paying them for their work and sharing in any donations. Paying them up front allows us to continue to feature more and more artists. The donations allow us to develop the free sections of our site including helping those in need. So, please donate to our artists if you like what you see.

The piece above is an interpretation of how crowdfunding is reshaping the pillars of society. For those daring enough to venture out into the crowdfunding space, banks are no longer needed as are many other industries including the music industry.

Sincerely,

DMWC

Kickstarter Update

This Kickstarter Update really gives tribute to the founders of the company that are really leading the way in showing us all how to stick with the vision that we have as small business owners – even when revenues are dancing right in front of us. Yes, staying on course with the mission and vision of the company is one of the most challenging objectives of any small business owner. We often find ourselves pulled in hundreds of different directions chasing revenues that were never the original intention of the company. And, on Kickstarter’s announcement on Thursday reminds us of the difficult decisions we all face when confronted with revenues that aren’t necessarily directly related to our mission. Kudos guys for sticking to your guns. But, what does it mean for the crowdfunding space? Opportunity!

Yes, now that Kickstarter has left the mass pre-sale product space, who will fill in the gap? Will www.indiegogo.com, www.rockethub.com or others step up to the plate allowing this type of crowdfunding to occur? Of course, as Kickstarter mentions, their reasons for discontinuing this line of crowdfunding was also because they felt (or potentially some legal folks felt) that it could get them into trouble by creating a misleading and unsubstantial attempt to obtain funding. And, given the amount of funds that are being generated and the amount of unfulfilled commitments (we’re still not sure if the pebble has shipped yet), we were all wondering when some lawyer might get the courage to step up and ask for the legal liability that Kickstarter has in monitoring unsubstantial rewards. Still, with the crowdfunding space being relatively new, we’re still wondering who will come up with a different approach to crowdfunding with promises of mass product pre-sales.

In fact, given the changes in the SEC regulations, we’re wondering if we haven’t stumbled upon another entirely new crowdfunding space between non-equity crowdfunding and equity crowdfunding. But, we’re headed off into another direction with that discussion. For now, we’ll just have to wait and see who, if anyone picks up the mass product pre-sale crowdfunding space.

Here’s a link to the Kickstarter updates. Be sure to read them before making your decision on which crowdfunding site to join.

Enclave Eyewear:twenty&twenty line featured on KICKSTARTER

Enclave Eyewear:twenty&twenty line featured on KICKSTARTER is a Santa Barbara, California campaign and given that we’re located in Santa Barbara, we just had to feature these guys on our site. And, we find that Santa Barbara, California is one of the best places to have a Start-up even with the extremely high cost of living – we’re just north of LA with approximately 10,000,000 people. And, we’re flush with potential investors.

In any case, here’s what Enclave Eyewear:twenty&twenty line featured on KICKSTARTER
had to say about their fundraising campaign:

Polarized sunglasses constructed from memory plastic and polycarbonate. Quality materials and classic style.

I’m here to launch the twenty & twenty model of enclave eyewear.

As a college student in Santa Barbara, CA, I struggled to find the right pair of sunglasses. I didn’t want the cheap acrylic and PC sunglasses you see everywhere that crack, warp, and form stress marks at the first signs of wear and don’t really protect your eyes.

I also disliked that a few large powerhouses are running a sunglass monopoly and overcharging for glasses that really aren’t made that well. For example, Ray Ban, Oakley, and SunglassHut are actually owned by the same parent company, Luxottica, that controls the design, manufacturing, pricing, and distribution of their branded sunglasses. This results in prices disproportionate to quality.

With Enclave’s twenty&twenty model, I wanted to get away from these two extremes and offer a high quality product without the brand inflation. I wanted glasses I would want to bring to a party or wear at the beach but not have to worry about dropping or scratching them. Glasses that actually protect my eyes and look good at the same time. My glasses feature polarized, UV400 protected lenses and a memory frame that’s unbelievably durable.

My goal is to offer an honest product that doesn’t sacrifice quality.

-Daniel

TWENTY & TWENTY MODEL:

If we get funded, the twenty&twenty model will be our signature line, which is why we’re offering it first on Kickstarter. I took my own product design experience and created electronic renditions to source samples and refine the design, colors, and materials used in the twenty&twenty line. The final product couples polarized polycarbonate lenses with a durable, lightweight, BPA-free memory frame. As a reward for your pledge, please choose from any of the seven colors below.

I believe that you deserve to know what goes into your sunglasses and we’ve done our best to source the highest quality materials available.

6-layer Polarized Polycarbonate Lens:

Polycarbonate is seen in a wide range of applications, most interesting to us is its use in bullet-resistant glass, aircraft canopies, and riot shields. It is lighter and harder than plastic lenses (CR-39), making it extremely scratch resistant. It is chosen for it’s unparalleled clarity and shatter-resistant properties (30x more so than glass); the same reasons we use it for our lenses.

The lens begins with a polarized polycarbonate core, which is then thermally fused to five additional layers. Two UV filters block 100% of UVA and UVB ultraviolet rays up to 400 nanometers. A flash color film further reduces glare and acts as a one-way-mirror (only on the mirror lenses). And finally two scratch resistant films that keep everything protected and looking good.

Thermoplastic Memory Frame:

The frames are an injection molded thermoplastic memory polymer that can be put under extreme pressure and still return to its original shape.

It is a durable, forgiving material that allows the frame to flex comfortably to your face, avoiding stress fractures and other damage you see in cheaper frames. It is amazingly light, not degraded by UV wavelengths or human sweat, and is BPA and EA free. The increased flexibility and strength can withstand more abuse and sit comfortably on any face, giving it a clear advantage over other common frame materials.

WHERE KICKSTARTER COMES IN:

We’ve sourced a leading manufacturer of frames and lenses which are hand assembled, polished, and packaged to our exact specifications. But we need your help to go from working prototype to full scale production. Your pledge will go towards production and high-strength steel moulds necessary for the factory to turn out the quality we want on a larger scale. If the goal is met and barring any setbacks I expect to be shipping these out to you from sunny Southern California by October!

REWARDS:

As a reward for your pledge we’re going to send you the first production run of the twenty&twenties.

All reward levels will include a limited edition Kickstarter microfiber pouch for each pair of sunglasses and free shipping within the United States (including Hawaii and Alaska). For international shipping please add $7. At the end of the Kickstarter campaign, you will receive a survey so you can specify which colors you would like.

$30 pledge: one pair of twenty&twenties (any colors) + microfiber pouch

$55 pledge: two pairs of twenty&twenties (any colors) + microfiber pouches

$105 pledge: four pairs of twenty&twenties (any colors) + microfiber pouches

$180 pledge: The Collection – all seven colors of the twenty&twenty line

$250 pledge: ten pairs of twenty&twenties (any colors) + microfiber pouches

Send NYC Salt Photo Students to Summer Camp featured on Rocket Hub

Here’s an example of exactly why we’re telling everyone about crowdfunding and building an online resource for others to see why crowdfunding is so vital to our economy and future. If you’re wondering if you should be running a crowdfunding campaign be sure to follow this campaign and read through our inside scoop as we get the inside details on how they decided to use a crowdfunding platform to get the word out about their project. Here’s what they’re doing:

Check them out at RocketHuB

What our project is:
Every year we raise money to send our photography students to the Summer Press Institute at Syracuse University. SPI is a photography, writing, and video camp taught by the Newhouse faculty. It not only is a fabulous intensive week of photography training for our students, but it also introduces them to college life. They live in the dorms, use the computer and classrooms at the Newhouse School, and have a fun summer experience away from the city. The outcome we’ve seen over the past four years of sending our students to Syracuse is that this experience has inspired our students to go to college. AND two of our recent graduates have received full scholarships to Syracuse.

Who we are:
NYC SALT is a free photography program for inner city high school students. We (a group of professional photographers and photo editors in NYC) teach the art and business of photography and provide college prep for our students. Our vision is to see each student develop an award winning portfolio that will help in getting scholarship money for college. We’ve been in existence for over 7 years. In the past two years since becoming a nonprofit, we have had two graduating classes totaling 14 students who are going on to college, many are the first in their families. In addition, our students have collectively received 17 Scholastic Art Awards in the past two years! Check out our website to see the students’ work! NYC SALT

The cost:
This year, we do not have enough money to send our kids to camp. Tuition costs $500 per student plus transportation ($100) and food ($100) for the week. We have 10 students who are eligible to go. Please help us provide this amazing experience for our students!

In addition:
If we are to raise over our goal of $8000 for camp expenses, we are also in desperate need of more computers and cameras for our classes so that the students are learning on the same DSLR and have some different lenses to check out from the camera locker. Currently, we have only 3 computers for 17 students which makes editing hard!
